No. 97 : Shorts, Videos, YouTubes Etc (102/102)


 I'm as currently up to date with all things Shannon as I can be, as the half dozen films I have still to find remain elusive. His next project is slated to be 'Buddy' in September of 2026, so before then I thought I'd fire up this placeholder slot on my list for all the Shannon ephemera out there. He does keep himself busy, so the list won't be exhaustive, but feel free to chip in anything else he's done that you enjoyed.

Love Letter to Texas (titles are linked to where you can see them.) This is a short film featuring Shannon that was written and directed by his long time collaborator, Jeff Nichols. It is quite an ethereal piece that sees a down at heel man being rescued by Shannon and taken to a motel room. He steals Shannon's money and heads out into the Texas badlands. The story is narrated by Sissy Spacek and we learn more in flashback of an oil find and a gambling loss and a separation between what I assume to be brothers. There is a redemptive feel about the whole film and I enjoyed it.

Long Way Back Home - Lucero Music Video This is another Shannon/Nichols colab which also features the familiar face of Paul Sparks. Although essentially a music video there is plenty of spoken dialogue and a narrative that follows a man returning to his hometown seeking answers and possibly revenge. The action mirrors the song lyrics to a degree, but it it is a strong standalone piece and a banger of a track to boot.

Architectural Digest Visit Michal Shannon's Brooklyn Home This is an interesting insight to the actor's life which has him take us round his modest Brooklyn apartment. It is really nice, and probably worth millions, but it does seem almost out of keeping with his star status - I'm guessing he doesn't need a big mansion to show off. He does give away some personal details about his two daughters and you can read between the lines that he's no longer with their mother. I like the actor and am not interested in his private life, but he was open and generous with what he disclosed. The flat did look a bit staged - not a sock on the floor to be seen!

  Here’s an awful American remake of the European film ‘13 Tzameti’ which I saw a long time ago and enjoyed. The original was a black and white effort set in Eastern Europe. In that the murder game being played looked horribly realistic and possible. In this remake version you get Jason Statham and 50 Cent going through the motions in a ridiculous offering which is believable as a politician's promise. Our hero is Vince (Sam Reily) a doe eyed electrician whose Dad is in the hospital. They have mortgaged the house for his treatment but a further operation is needed. Vince works as an electrician and whilst at a client’s house he overhears a conversation about a big job. This job is seemingly lucrative, but dangerous too. The client talks loudly about the secret scheme and has a bright coloured envelope with a sinister spider motif which was clearly designed so as not to attract attention. No. 43 Boardwalk Empire Season 4 Part 2 Eps. 7-12 (2013) 44 of 100

  This season ended up, as most have so far, with some stories resolved and others just hatching. I didn’t enjoy it as much as the three previous seasons and I got the impression that the writers had painted themselves into a corner somewhat. Nucky keeps doing his deals and looking somewhat constipated, whilst once again his brother Eli plots against him. I think they are going for a Kane and Abel dynamic here but it doesn’t make sense that a savvy business man like Nucky would allow himself to be betrayed once again. To be fair Eli was motivated by helping his son who was being threatened with the jail, quite correctly, by FBI man Knox. Nucky seems a bit asleep at the wheel having been enchanted by the busty Patricia Arquette who is now running his Florida interests. Nucky is keen to get out but keeps getting drawn back in due to his many commitments and previous actions. The main thread throughout the season concerns Chalky and Narcisse. No. 6 Boardwalk Empire Season 1 Part 2 Eps. 7-12 (2010) 38 of 100

  The second half of season one really ratchets up the violence and our investment in the characters, not least Shannon’s Agent Van Arlen. The twelve episodes form a neat arc that could exist as a stand alone mini series if nothing else was to follow. All of the plots reach a resolution of sorts, and although some futures are left uncertain, everyone got some redemption or development at least. In the first episode a booze shipment is hijacked and that action resonates throughout the series, as revenge is meted out and consequences felt. I don’t know if a second series was commissioned as the first ended, as the stories aren’t left hanging, but we are intrigued to see where the characters end up next. The main focus of the show is the relationships between Nucky and Margaret who have an on and off and then on again romance.
